Continence Organisations in the UK and Abroad

The UK Continence Alliance

The main professional and voluntary organisations in the UK concerned with incontinence work together in the informal UK Continence Alliance.

THE CONTINENCE FOUNDATION is a member and is the organisation with the widest interest in the subject.

The other members are:

THE ASSOCIATION FOR CONTINENCE ADVICE: the multidisciplinary organisation for health and social care professionals with a special interest in incontinence.

CONTINENCE PRODUCTS EVALUATION NETWORK: funded by the Medical Devices Agency, the network organises multi-centre trials of incontinence products. Its Director, Alan Cottenden, is a trustee of the Foundation.

THE CONTINENCE RESOURCE CENTRE AND HELPLINE FOR SCOTLAND: partly funded by the Scottish Office, the Centre, based at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, provides a confidential telephone helpline and a clinic and raises awareness (with media and other activities) of the problems of incontinence.

EDUCATION AND RESOURCES FOR IMPROVING CHILDHOOD CONTINENCE (ERIC): the national charity that provides advice and information on bedwetting and day wetting to children, parents, young adults and professionals.

INCONTACT: the support organisation for incontinent people and their carers. It produces newsletters, has local groups and undertakes projects.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR COLITIS AND CROHN'S DISEASE (NACC)

UK CONTINENCE SOCIETY: the UK branch brings together researchers, scientists and clinicians at an annual meeting to share their work and ideas.

PROMOCON: the project at Disabled Living (Manchester) concerned with promotion of continence through product awareness, which is also working on the role of occupatonal therapy in continence and on regional public awareness campaigns.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF NURSING CONTINENCE CARE FORUM: the organisation for RCN members with a special interest in continence care.

Associates of the Foundation

Many other organisations for whom incontinence is an issue work closely with the Foundation:

International Links

Internationally, the key organisation is the INTERNATIONAL CONTINENCE SOCIETY, which holds an annual scientific meeting.

It has a CONTINENCE PROMOTION COMMITTEE which brings together voluntary organisations throughout the world. Most of these can be reached through the ICS site - click here for a list.
